TORNADO WATCH
Tornado Watch
Technique: Wet process cyanotype and solar dye prints, hand stitched hexagons, machine stitching
Artist Statement: Part of my ongoing series addressing the effect of climate change on weather events. The anxiety caused by receiving a tornado watch alert is ever so slightly mitigated by briefly watching the fierce beauty of the storm unfold, as the sky turns odd colors and the wind swirls, before heading to a hopefully sheltered location. Waiting for it to pass allows time to reflect on the policies that are making this occurrence more commonplace. The plant prints are made using sunshine and time. The hexagons are apotropaic, representing a metaphorical but imperfect protective shield against further disaster.
